Tell Me About Prairie

Prairie Baptist Church is a Christian community of faith birthed in denominational partnership with the American Baptist Church, (www.abc-usa.org/).  There are several differing kinds of Baptist congregations with a variety of practices and beliefs. American Baptists hold to the historic Baptist principles of local church autonomy, and the priesthood of the believer. Under this freedom and practice of Baptist belief, Prairie has developed congregational distinctives and practices of the Christian faith. Our distinctives serve as a tool to ground us and remind us of who we are and hope to be.

Prairie was founded in 1950 by 13 people on the then growing edge of Kansas City, who wanted to reach beyond their neighborhood to the whole world with the good news of God’s Love. Today, our congregation numbers approximately 350 people of all ages actively involved in some way.

We seek to be a congregation where people respect a difference of belief and understanding while continuing to love one another as Christ loves each of us. We strive to value and nurture the gifts and voices of all God’s people. We serve our local and global community in a variety of ways and means. We celebrate community through caring ministries, fellowship, and fun.

In 1974 our week day childcare center was birthed out of a desire to serve children and families with the same love we offer each other. The Prairie Early Childhood Center (PECC) provides a positive experience in a Christian setting and believes that all children “are a gift from God” (Psalm 127:3). The center’s goal is to offer developmentally appropriate curriculum that helps children grow socially, emotionally, cognitively, physically, and spiritually.
