DESCRIPTION:Dr. David May\, Professor of New Testament Emeritus\, Central S
 eminary\n"Justifying War's Violence or Teaching Nonviolence:\nHow are We t
o Understand the Bible\, as Followers of Jesus?"\nPart I: Weaponizing the
Bible for Violence –\nThursday\, October 8 at 12:00-1:00 pm (Central tim
e)\nPart II. Jesus’ Response to Violence –\nThursday\, October 15 at 1
 2:00-1:00 pm (Central time)\nZoom registration link: https://zoom.us/meeti
ng/register/KWFNxebsRcq2ZfReSVpREQ\nDescription: In some of the Bible's mo
st challenging passages\, violence appears to be\ncommanded or sanctioned
by God\, leading some political leaders and some people in the\npew to con
clude that violence can\, under certain circumstances\, be justified for G
od's\npeople. Yet a careful reading of Scripture challenges whether these
“texts of violence”\nshould be understood as establishing a normative
ethic for followers of Jesus. These two\nZoom sessions will explore the in
terpretive approaches that shape how Christians read\ndifficult passages i
n both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. Together\, we will\nconside
r how Jesus' life\, teachings\, and response to violence provide an interp
retive lens\nfor understanding Scripture and the Christian call to nonviol
 ence.
